Cultural-Historic Status Is Proposed for Three Sections of Times Mirror Square

The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission has proposed adding three sections of the Times Mirror Square complex downtown to the city’s list of historic-cultural monuments.
The buildings, headquarters of the Los Angeles Times, were built in 1934 and 1948 and are considered prime examples of the Moderne style as well as important symbols of local history, commission members said at a meeting Wednesday.
The proposed designation would affect the exteriors of the buildings between 1st and 2nd streets along Spring Street. Inside, it may include only the signature Globe Lobby facing 1st Street.
Officials of The Times requested and received a delay of at least a month before a commission vote.
William A. Niese, Times senior vice president for law and human resources, said the company wanted more time to study the consequences of landmark status. In general, any plans to significantly change a historic-cultural monument must be reviewed by the commission, and demolition can be delayed by a year.
