WHAT PRICE CULTURE?: When it comes to the new J. Paul Getty Center, the answer is $733 million. That’s what officials of the cultural center are saying its construction will cost, debunking rumors, but not by much, that the price would be a cool billion. . . . The price tag of the structure, which is increasingly visible above the San Diego Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass, includes $449 million for construction, $115 million for the land and site work and $30 million for fixtures and equipment. SPEAKING OF THE GETTY: Cal State Northridge President Blenda J. Wilson has been named to the board of trustees of the J. Paul Getty Trust. . . . The trust’s 15 board members manage the private foundation that operates the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities.
NATIVE TONGUE: While the number of American Indians in the Valley has fluctuated, their culture remains a part of our language . . . Tujunga means “big thunder,” Cahuenga is “place in the hills” and Topanga is “a place where the mountains run out to the sea” in the Fernandeno language. (B14)
