SOUTH-CENTRAL : Golden State Building Named Landmark

The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission has declared the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building a historical cultural monument.
Since the insurance firm opened new offices at Adams Boulevard and Western Avenue, the 1928 Spanish Colonial Revival-style building at 4261 S. Central Ave. has been used for storage.
Golden State, the fifth-largest black-owned business in the nation, began selling health and business insurance to the African-American community in the 1930s. Its Central Avenue location was in the heart of what was then the cultural and social center of the city’s black community.
The City Council is expected to approve the new status of the building within a month.
