6.5 quake rattles Solomon Islands; no damage reported

reporting from SYDNEY, Australia — A powerful earthquake has rattled the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Officials said there was no threat of a tsunami, and no damage has been reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 6.5 quake struck Friday about 100 miles west of the capital, Honiara, at a depth of six miles.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami.
Steve Nasiu of the Solomon’s National Disaster Management Office said there had been no reports of damage or injuries.
