Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov arrested on domestic violence charges

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov was arrested Wednesday in Denver on second-degree kidnapping and third-degree assault charges, the Denver Post reported on its website. According to the newspaper, the kidnapping charge is a Class 4 felony charge and the assault charge is a misdemeanor.

Varlamov, whose outstanding play has been a key factor in the Avalanche’s 10-1-0 start, was to remain in jail Wednesday night and make an appearance before a judge Thursday morning. He turned himself in to police earlier Wednesday.

The charges reportedly stem from an alleged incident of domestic violence.

The Avalanche issued a statement saying the organization was aware of the charges but would have no public comment.

The team next plays on Friday, at Dallas.

Varlamov, a native of Russia who is considered a top candidate to play for his homeland at the Sochi Olympics in February, is among the NHL’s leaders with a 1.76 goals-against average and .945 save percentage in eight games. He has a 7-1-0 record.
