Jeff Fisher, preparing for his fifth season as coach of the Rams, spent 17 years as coach of the Tennessee Titans franchise.
So he has familiarity with team that traded the No. 1 overall pick in this month’s NFL draft.
“In order to make a move of this magnitude you have to have a good trade partner,” Fisher said in a statement Thursday morning after the Rams acquired that pick. “We appreciate working with the Titans on an opportunity that can benefit both organizations.”
The Rams gave up their No. 15 pick in this year’s draft as well as two second-round picks, a third-round pick and their first- and third-round picks next year.
The Rams also received the Titans’ fourth- and sixth-round picks this year.
The Rams finished 7-9 last season and have not had a winning season since 2003.
General Manager Les Snead said in a statement that the trade reflected owner Stan Kroenke’s “dedication to assembling a winning team on the field.”
“We appreciate his commitment as we continue to improve our roster and lay the foundation for our future through this year’s draft,” Snead said.
Snead and Fisher are scheduled to meet with the media Thursday at 1 p.m. in Oxnard, where the Rams will begin their off-season program on Monday.
