Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez ankle injury scuttles Joshua Clottey bout Dec. 6

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has withdrawn from his scheduled Dec. 6 return fight on HBO versus Joshua Clottey due to an injured ankle.
Citing “persistent” pain in the left ankle, light-middleweight Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 knockouts) is now expected to be sidelined from training into December, likely meaning he won’t fight again until May.
Alvarez’s promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, is angling for a Cinco de Mayo weekend fight against middleweight world champion Miguel Cotto.
The Alvarez-Clottey fight was being negotiated to be fought at Houston’s Minute Maid Park.
In a statement, the promoter said, “Golden Boy Promotions and HBO are reviewing their options for the December 6 date.”
