CHICAGO — Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta is perfect through six innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Arrieta, who threw a no-hitter on Aug. 30 at the Dodgers, has eight strikeouts. He also hit a solo homer in the second, helping Chicago to a 2-0 lead on Sunday night.
The hardest-hit ball for the Pirates through the first six innings was pitcher A.J. Burnett’s low liner to shortstop Addison Russell for the final out of the third.
Arrieta is one of the top candidates for the NL Cy Young Award. He entered with a major league-leading 20 wins, to go along with 220 strikeouts and a 1.88 ERA.
Arrieta has thrown 75 pitches.
Pittsburgh began the day with an eight-game win streak, matching a season high.
