Top teams still in contention at Manhattan Beach Open

There were 32 men’s and 32 women’s teams that competed in the main-draw competition at the Manhattan Beach Open on Saturday.
But heading into Sunday’s final day of play at the professional beach volleyball event, only eight teams from each side remain — and the top-seeded teams are among them.
The U.S. Olympian pair of Sean Rosenthal and Jake Gibb, the No. 1-seeded men’s team that finished fifth in London, will face Adrian Carambula and Steve Grotowski, the seventh-seeded team, in the quarterfinals.
Third-seeded Sean Scott and John Hyden, who won the open last year, will face second-seeded Matt Fuerbringer and Nick Lucena, the squad that was beaten out by Rosenthal and Gibb for a spot in the London Olympics.
On the women’s side, the top-seeded duo of Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik, the reigning open champions, will face fourth-seeded Lauren Fendrick and Rachel Scott. Third-seeded Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat will play seventh-seeded Nicole Branagh and Brittany Hochevar.
Matches will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday with the quarterfinal rounds at the open, known as the “crown jewel” of beach volleyball events. The women’s final will be held at 2:15 p.m. and the men’s final is scheduled for 4 p.m. The first-place teams will take home $11,000, the second-place teams receive $7,500 and the third-place teams receive $5,500.
The event, part of the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series, is free to the public and is being held near the Manhattan Beach Pier.
