Whither Miami’s Big Three?

REPORTING FROM SAN ANTONIO — So, whatcha gonna do now?

What the future holds for Miami’s LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh became the biggest question after the San Antonio Spurs polished off the Heat to win a fifth championship with a 104-87 victory in Game 5 of the Finals on Sunday night at the AT&T Center.

All three players can opt out of their contracts this summer, meaning they could return to chase a third title together … or not.

“You guys are trying to find answers,” James said after finishing with 31 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in what seemed like a lonely endeavor to get his team back into the series. “I’m not going to give you one. I’m just not going to give it to you. When I get to that point, I’ll deal with it.”

If this is it for the Heat’s Big Three, its time together qualified as a wildly up-and-down existence after James and Bosh joined Wade in South Beach in the summer of 2010. Miami went to four consecutive Finals and won championships in 2012 and ’13.

“It’s been a hell of a ride in these four years,” said Wade, who was again part of a disappointing supporting cast with 11 points on four-for-12 shooting. “”When we decided to play together, we didn’t say, ‘OK, let’s try for four years. We said, ‘Let’s just play together and let’s see what happens.’ ”

James called the Heat’s Finals loss to the Dallas Mavericks in 2011 “probably more hurtful than this one in the sense of we had put so much into it, we were going through so much” in their first season together.

If James, Wade and Bosh do return as a trio, it seems apparent that there must be significant roster changes, considering the Heat was blown out in three consecutive games to end the series.

“I don’t think it’s just the Spurs” that the Heat has to catch, James said. “It’s the whole league. The whole league continues to get better every single year. Obviously, we would need to get better from every facet, every position. It’s just how the league works.”
