Edgar Martinez is hired by Mariners as hitting coach

Edgar Martinez was hired as hitting coach by the Seattle Mariners, who reassigned Howard Johnson to the minor league system.
The Mariners made the announcement Saturday.
Martinez, 52, spent his 18-year career with the Mariners and batted .312 with a .418 on-base percentage. He was the American League batting champion twice.
