Jay Jay Wilson, a Valencia High grad who has grown to 6 feet 3, 245 pounds, left for Arizona State on Saturday to begin his college days and play football for the Sun Devils.
The fact he has made it this far is a tribute to him and all the people at Valencia who helped him along the way. In particular, Coach Larry Muir refused to give up on Wilson despite his academic struggles early in his high school career.
Wilson had to crack down on the books and made it happen, Muir said.
“I’m so proud,” Muir said. “It’s one of the great stories in high school football. He worked his tail off all the way to graduation.”
Wilson has always had the football talent. But he had to perform better in the classroom to have a chance to play in college.
Now he’s earned his shot. He’s expected to be an H back at Arizona State.
