Speak Up Newport gives Paul Salata award

Paul Salata, former pro football player and USC star, received the

SUNshine Award from local group Speak Up Newport at the annual

Newport Beach Mayor’s Dinner Tuesday night.

The group has given out the awards to those who have performed

outstanding service to the community, Treasurer Dave Goff said.

Goff said Newport Beach resident Salata was the group’s choice for

the award because “he is a man with a lifetime of giving.”

“He makes people laugh, he makes them happy,” he said. “He has

been recognized by many, but we thought it was time our group gave

him due recognition.”

Gay Sandoval receives attorney award

Attorney Coach of the Year by the Constitutional Rights Foundation of

Orange County.

The group honored top high school teams and individuals at its

22nd Mock Trial Awards Luncheon on Friday.

Roads to close at JWA for security reasons

John Wayne Airport will close a few access roads because of

increased security measures by the Transportation Security

Administration.

The Michelson Drive entrance to the airport closed this morning

and, beginning Friday, the access road from the San Diego Freeway

into the airport will be closed.

Those coming to the airport must enter either from Campus Drive to

the south or the Costa Mesa Freeway offramp from the north.

Officials said security continues to be at a heightened level

since Sept. 11, 2001, and that police staffing has been increased.
