Readers React: Trans-Pacific treaty doubts

The Op-Ed article by President Obama and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott begins as a feel-good promotion of the military partnership between Australia and America. It isn’t until the 10th paragraph that we learn this push piece is really about the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership. (“Obama and Abbott: The U.S. and Australia make common cause in the Pacific,” Opinion, June 12)
Crafting of this treaty was done in secret with corporate representatives at the table but no public advocacy groups. As details leak out regarding the negative aspects of the plan, many experts are finding that jobs will be outsourced, environmental regulations can be bypassed and inequality will be further enhanced.
The Obama administration should open this treaty to intense scrutiny by the general public. Our future is much too important for him to placate his supporters by telling them that everything will be fine.
