Readers React: Praying for peace isn’t enough

Pope Francis has the answer to the cause of the endless strife in the Middle East: It’s the devil. (“Pope Francis prays for peace with Israeli, Palestinian leaders,” June 8)
Who knew? If we could only find him and stop “the evil one” from messing up the peace talks, we’d have progress.
Francis encourages prayer as a solution to the problem. But here’s the situation: Two groups of people pray to their respective versions of God for what they believe He promised them. It’s certainly not peace, but a piece of the Holy Land that is rightfully theirs. The only thing the devil has to do is sit on the sidelines.
There will never be peace as long as we expect prayer to provide an effective contribution to combating the world’s ills.
