Readers React: Don’t let dirty energy power ‘clean’ electric vehicles

To the editor: Far more important than who will and how to pay for new charging stations is the issue of what should be the source of all of that energy that will power electric vehicles. (“The right way to charge electric cars,” editorial, Jan. 27)
If we simply substitute the exhaust emissions of gas-burning cars for coal- and petroleum-fire emissions of electricity-generating plants, we will be gaining little in terms of global warming.
There should be a major effort to utilize solar, wind, hydroelectric and nuclear power sources in exchange for the gasoline- and diesel-burning emissions removed from the highways. If we do that, we will maximize the advantages of the electric vehicles to our climate and air quality.
