Google showcases 5th-grader’s winning doodle, a kaleidoscopic purifier

Audrey Zhang may just be a fifth-grader, but she is a determined artist. After earning a spot among the national finalists in the annual Doodle 4 Google art contest last year, she wanted the top spot. And this year, she won it with the amazing artwork shown above.
The winner of Google’s annual Doodle 4 Google contest, for kindgarten through 12th grades, is featured on the search engine giant’s homepage for 24 hours. Today, the work by 11-year-old Zhang of New York is showcased and will be seen by millions of users.
This year marks the first time in the history of the 5-year-old contest that animation has been added to the winner’s original artwork. Audrey helped in that process.
The fifth-grader spent a day at the company’s Mountain View headquarters brainstorming ideas for the animation with the doodle team, “sketching on paper and digitally,” Liat Ben-Rafael, Doodle 4 Google program manager, told the Los Angeles Times. “What resulted is incredibly vibrant.”
Her artwork, “Back to Mother Nature,” depicts a purifier that pulls in polluted water and transforms it. Audrey will receive a $30,000 college scholarship, and her elementary school gets a $50,000 technology grant.
