2 men killed in early morning head-on crash in Pico Rivera

Two men were killed early Monday in a head-on collision in Pico Rivera, authorities said.
Just after 4 a.m., a Cadillac traveling southbound on Paramount Boulevard near Dunlap Crossing Road veered into oncoming traffic and slammed into a northbound Honda, said Det. Jose Marquez of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s Pico Rivera Station.
The force of the collision sent the black Honda skidding into a northbound curb and destroyed both vehicles. Wreckage was strewn across the roadway.
Both the driver and passenger in the Honda died, Marquez said. The detective identified the driver as Javier Gonzalez, 64, of Huntington Park, and the passenger as Rodrigo Mendez, 59, of Los Angeles.
The identity of the Cadillac driver had not yet been released, but the driver is a male in his early 20s, Marquez said. Doctors amputated one of his legs and were considering amputating the other, he said.
Several media reports have said the driver of the Cadillac was arrested and suspected of driving under the influence. Marquez said only that the case was still under investigation.
