A pilot and passenger were injured Tuesday morning after a small plane experienced unknown trouble and crashed in a grassy field near Corona Municipal Airport, officials said.
The Harmon Rocket airplane had just taken off from the airport and was flying east, said John DeYoe, a spokesman for the Corona Fire Department.
While in the air, the aircraft experienced some trouble, he said. The pilot acted quickly and made an emergency landing about 10:55 a.m. in a field near the airport, DeYoe said.
When firefighters arrived, they used specialized tools to cut the damaged plane and remove the pilot and passenger, he said.
They suffered moderate to severe injuries and were taken to a trauma center.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, according to FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer.
