A man who fled police during a wild chase in Azusa on Sunday leaped from rooftop to rooftop before fatally injuring himself jumping through a second-story window, authorities said.
The man, who was not immediately identified, was 19 years old and wanted on a drug-related warrant, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Azusa police tried to arrest him about 3 p.m. in the 800 block of East Pepper Tree Lane when he ran into a family member’s apartment, officials said.
Azusa police had the residence surrounded, but the man got away when he emerged from a second-floor window and started jumping across adjacent rooftops, officials said.
Sheriff’s deputies say the man then jumped through a second-story window of an apartment building that they then surrounded.
Azusa police, thinking there were guns inside the apartment, tried communicating with the man several times before moving in, officials said.
Subsequently, a SWAT team found the man dead inside the apartment, apparently from injuries he suffered going through the window, authorities said.
The Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.
