Sheila Tehrani walks on a treadmill inside her small Eagle Rock home with her 3-year-old niece. Before Tehrani’s recent surgery, hanging skin from losing 138 pounds had inhibited her workout routine. Paul Miles, 24, rigs a fake bush to hide an illegal trail. He is part of the Student Conservation Assn., a nonprofit organization that sent him and six others to a section of the east Mojave Desert for an eight-month hitch. They get $160 a week. The California desert is a fragile landscape, prone to slow change and slow healing.
