A tranquilized elephant is winched aboard a recovery vehicle as rescuers evacuate elephants persecuted in a human-elephant conflict in the southern African country of Malawi. Local subsistence farmers sometimes use violence to protect crops from raids by the elephants. At least 10 people and a number of elephants have recently died in such confrontations. The International Fund for Animal Welfare said a group of nine elephants, including three young calves, were successfully darted and tranquilized and are en route to the Majete Wildlife Reserve.
