No golden parachute for departing KCET chief Al Jerome, station says

Al Jerome is leaving KCET-TV without a golden parachute, the station says.

The longtime chief of the troubled public broadcaster announced this week that he’ll step down at Burbank-based KCETLink, which has faced serious financial problems in recent months.

But -- despite persistent speculation from some viewers and supporters of the station, which left PBS at the start of 2011 -- Jerome won’t head for the exits with a rich retirement package.

“Al chose to retire, thus upon his retirement he will not receive a compensation package of any sort,” KCETLink spokeswoman Ariel Carpenter wrote in an email reply to questions about Jerome’s pay.

KCET’s money woes have led to dozens of layoffs at the station. But senior managers haven’t been immune to the problems either.

Since 2011, Jerome’s pay has been shaved by $100,000 and now stands at $357,000. Carpenter said the cutback was voluntary on Jerome’s part.
