After Monday’s Supreme Court ruling invalidating a Texas law the court found to be overly restrictive of abortion clinics, Twitter was divided. However, individuals on either side of the aisle came together in the aftermath for a single purpose: to decry a tweet from “The Daily Show.”
After the Supreme Court’s ruling, “The Daily Show” official account tweeted, “Celebrate the #SCOTUS ruling! Go knock someone up in Texas!”
Social media was collectively unamused by the tweet.
Meghan McCain, political contributor and columnist, as well as daughter of GOP Sen. John McCain, responded to the tweet, saying, “This tweet is so vile.”
Journalist and creator of HBO’s “The Wire,” David Simon, shared a similar viewpoint, tweeting, “I’m all for offending someone for the sake of real humor. This? It’s like the O’Douls of bad taste.”
Other Twitter users went a step further and provided helpful suggestions to improve “The Daily Show” in the future:
Around an hour later, “The Daily Show” Twitter account sought to clarify its joke with a follow-up tweet about celebrating the Supreme Court’s reaffirmation of right to choice.
How did Twitter respond?
At least Justin Timberlake understands “The Daily Show’s” pain.
