A musical version of the 1992 movie “Honeymoon in Vegas” will officially open on Broadway in January, with a cast that includes Tony Danza, best known for TV’s “Taxi” and “Who’s the Boss?” and who appeared in a production of the musical at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey last year.
“Honeymoon in Vegas” is set to open Jan. 15 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, which is currently home to the musical “After Midnight,” closing Jun. 29. “Vegas” will have a rather lengthy preview period, with performances scheduled to begin Nov. 18.
Danza will play the role originated in the movie by James Caan -- a professional gambler who becomes involved with a young couple who have come to Vegas to get married. The movie starred Nicolas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker as the couple; on stage, the roles will be played by Rob McClure and Brynn O’Malley.
Andrew Bergman, who wrote and directed the movie, has written the book of the musical, which features a score by Jason Robert Brown. Brown won a Tony Award earlier this month for the score of “The Bridges of Madison County.” The production is to be directed by Gary Griffin.
The musical’s run at the Paper Mill Playhouse was met with glowing reviews, including a rave from the New York Times.
Danza has appeared on Broadway before, including a stint in “The Producers,” in which he took over the role originated by Nathan Lane.
