Donald Sterling, Billionaires’ Beach and a teardown headline L.A.’s priciest sales

An off-market sale in Beverly Hills, a teardown in Brentwood and two penthouse units in Westwood were among the most expensive residential real estate in the greater Los Angeles area this past week.

$18.382 million — Beverly Hills

Former Warner Bros. Records chief Tom Whalley sold a 7,000-square-foot home in the 9000 block of Sunset Boulevard to former L.A. Clippers owners Donald and Shelly Sterling for $18.382 million in a deal that closed off-market.

The Tudor-style home, built in 1952, has a den, a library/study, five bedrooms and six bathrooms across two floors. There are three fireplaces.

Grounds of about 1.6 acres contains two patios, a swimming pool, a guest/pool house and formal landscaping. A wide motor court marks the entrance to the home.

The house previously sold for about $5.15 million in 2001, according to public records.

$10.75 million — Malibu

A New England-style Traditional in the 21000 block of Pacific Coast Highway sold after relisting in June for $10.995 million. It previously sold for $1.42 million in 1996.

Fronting Carbon Beach, the two-story home was renovated in 1998 and features a brick-lined entry, beamed ceilings and a living room with a fireplace.

Four ocean-view bedrooms and four bathrooms are within 3,422 square feet of living space.

Sliding glass doors off the common areas open to a large deck, a barbecue and a stairway leading down to the shore.

David Offer of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties was the listing agent. Kurt Rappaport of Westside Estate Agency repped the buyer.

$7.6 million — Brentwood

In the 12000 block of Hanover Street, a corner-lot property sold for $100,000 over the August list price. Previously, it sold a half-century ago for $29,500.

Marketed as a teardown, the palm-topped setting includes fruit trees, a black walnut tree and rolling lawns on about half an acre.

Katrina Klotz of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and Gardy Weickert of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties were the listing agents. David Offer, also of Berkshire Hathaway, represented the buyer.

$7.5 Million — Westwood

At the Carlyle Residences in the 10700 block of Wilshire Boulevard, a three-bedroom penthouse sold after relisting in May for $8.85 million.

Dubbed the Minotti Penthouse for interiors designed by the L.A.-based firm, the 23rd-floor unit boasts an open-space design with wood floors, 13-foot ceilings and Poggenpohl cabinetry. Walls of windows take in sweeping city views.

The 5,283 square feet of living space includes formal living and dining rooms, an office/study, three bedrooms and five bathrooms. Three covered parking spaces are included with the unit.

Jennifer Bittel and Violet Kim of The Agency were the listing agents.

$6.1 million — Westwood

A two-story penthouse at The Wilshire in the 10500 block of Wilshire Boulevard sold for $3.5 million less than the original asking price.

Formerly owned by Severin Wunderman, the late owner of Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Corum, the four-bedroom unit previously went for about $3.06 million in 1991.

Interiors featuring parquet wood floors, built-ins and delicate molding include a two-story living room with a grand staircase and walls of glass, a media room and a master suite with walk-in closets. The kitchen opens to a wide terrace.

David Bailey and Kelly Selcer of Keller Williams Beverly Hills represented both sides of the transaction.

$5.77 million — Santa Monica

In the 500 block of 25th Street, a two-story contemporary sold after relisting in July for $5.995 million. The property previously sold for $712,000 in 1996, records show.

Done in polished concrete and steel accents, the loft-inspired home features a versatile floor plan with floating wall sections, clerestory windows and a telescoping pocket.

The 5,930 square feet of space includes a floating staircase, formal living and dining rooms and a galley-style kitchen with a wide island. Six bedrooms and seven bathrooms include a master suite with a private balcony.

An outdoor living room, a patio and an expanse of grass make up the grounds.

Rande Gray and Todd J. Michaud had the listing. Shih-Hung Yen of Home Tech Realty Co. repped the buyer.

These are among the top residential real estate sales reported on the combined L.A./Westside Multiple Listing Service for the period beginning September 6 and ending September 12.
