Triumph introduces bigger Tiger Explorer motorcycle

Triumph Motorcycles is continuing to breed its popular Tiger, most recently with a larger Explorer model that pushes performance both on and off road. Unveiled in Italy last month, the new Tiger Explorer is padding onto the carpet for its North American debut at the Long Beach International Motorcycle Shows expo this weekend and will announce its presence with a distinct growl.
Watch out, BMW. Triumph’s Tiger Explorer is powered with a new 1,215-cc, inline-three-cylinder engine that makes a class-leading 135 horsepower and aims to run any stray GS off the road. The bike marks the debut of Triumph’s new ride-by-wire electronic throttle system, which forfeits mechanical control of the throttle to a computer that can better manage the bike’s power in conjunction with safety features such as traction control and anti-lock brakes, both of which can be turned on or off.
With the meaning of “value” in this protracted “value” marketplace no longer defined by low cost but rather by versatility and capability, the Explorer comes with a leggy 33.7-inch saddle, but a 31.6-inch accessory seat is available. The windscreen and handlebars are also adjustable. A low-maintenance shaft drive helps increase the Tiger Explorer’s service interval to 10,000 miles.
Instead of two 17-inch wheels, the front wheel has been beefed up to 19 inches for riders who intend to pop a curb and head into the wild. Once they get there, a new LCD instrument panel can help guide them with features including an ice warning indicator. The bike includes a 950-watt generator to run accessories such as GPS; heated gear; heated grips, rider and passenger seats; and fog lights.
Pricing hasn’t yet been announced, nor have fuel economy figures. The 2012 Triumph Tiger Explorer is expected in the U.S. in May.
