Democrats seize upon Mitt Romney’s ‘I’m also unemployed’ remark

Debbie Wasserman Schultz and other Democrats were quick to pounce on Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s remark in Tampa on Thursday that he can relate to the jobless because “I’m also unemployed.”

“I’m networking,” Romney reportedly told a small gathering of job seekers. “I have my sight on a particular job.”

Romney was speaking light-heartedly, but Democrats called it a clueless and insensitive reference in a state with a double-digit unemployment rate.

“Being unemployed, Mr. Romney, is not a joke--not to my constituents in Florida or to millions of Americans across the country,” said Wasserman Schultz, a congresswoman from Weston and chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee. “Folks in my home state and across the country, who are struggling every day to make ends meet, do not need someone making light of their situation.”

Romney, a multi-millionaire and successful businessman, is pitching his campaign on the theme that he knows how to rev up the economy and create jobs.

“I wish I had a job for everybody,” Romney told the job seekers, according to The New York Times. “I may be unemployed for longer than I’d like.”
