BBQ, Brews and Red, White & Blues

When, where: July 3 and 4, the Queen Mary

Highlights: Celebrate the Fourth of July with live music, a down-home barbecue (including a build-your-own strawberry shortcake station), an impressive fireworks display, dancing under the stars and children’s activities, all aboard one of the world’s most famous ships.

ALAMEDA, CALIF.

Fourth of July Party

When, where: July 4, USS Hornet

Highlights: Board this historic aircraft carrier for a family-friendly Independence Day party. On deck will be live concerts, games, tours, carnival games, a flight simulator and plenty of food, beer and wine. The grand finale: a panoramic view of fireworks across the Bay Area.

Cost: $20 in advance; $25 at the door; $10 for ages 5 to 17; free for ages 4 and younger

MENDOCINO, CALIF.

Mendocino Music Festival

When, where: July 10-24, Mendocino Headlands State Park

Highlights: For the 24th summer, a 16,000-square-foot tented concert hall will be constructed overlooking the Pacific Ocean. In it, chamber, opera (“Carmen”), jazz, bluegrass, world, dance and big-band music will delight music lovers. A children’s matinee engages the little ones.

Cost: Tickets start at $10, but vary by event and seating area

NORTH PLAINS, ORE.

Northwest String Summit

When, where: July 16-18, Horning’s Hideout

Highlights: Guitar, banjo, fiddle, bass and cello players and fans converge for this ninth annual music-and-camping event in a forest 20 minutes from Portland. For kids: a playground, arts and crafts and a parade featuring giant handmade puppets.

Cost: $155 for a three-day pass ($145 if purchased before July 15); $100 for a two-day pass; both prices include camping. Children ages 10 and younger are free with a paying adult.
