BOOKS
Don Lattin The author of “The Harvard Psychedelic Club” presents and signs his lively history of how Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, Huston Smith and Andrew Weil crossed paths in the early ‘60s at a Harvard-sponsored psychedelic-drug research project. Lattin tracks the resultant launching of a new American culture centered on yoga classes, organic produce and alternative medicine. Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd. 7 p.m. Free. (310) 659-3110. www.booksoup.com.
Sapphire The writer had a mainstream breakout with the film “Precious,” based on her novel “Push.” But her fiction, essays and poetry have long dissected the fraught intersections of race, class and gender in America; at this forum, she’ll discuss how these themes informed her career and her newer work. ALOUD at Central Library, Mark Taper Auditorium, 630 W. 5th St., Los Angeles. 7 p.m., free. www.lapl.org.
MOVIES
Light Echoes Dark Julie Murray’s experimental films are like visual poems, combining found and original footage and playing off rhythm, form and movement. Murray will present and discuss a program of 16-mm films, including “Orchard,” shot at a ruin in her native Ireland, and her latest work, “Elements,” a meditation on place. REDCAT, 631 W. 2nd St. $9. 8:30 p.m. (213) 237-2800. www.redcat.org.
POP MUSIC
Jakob Dylan The Wallflower (and son of Bob) called in some impressive collaborators to help with his new “Women and Country” album, which is coming out Tuesday. At the top of the list is producer extraordinaire T Bone Burnett and singer-songwriter Neko Case, the latter of whom serves as his vocal foil on several songs. He performs from it here. Grammy Museum, 800 W. Olympic Blvd., L.A. 7:30 p.m. $18. www.grammymuseum.org.
