Military deaths

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel who died in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Philippines:

Ryan C. Adams, 26 of Rhinelander, Wis.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Adams was killed Friday when his vehicle was attacked with a rocket-propelled grenade in central Afghanistan’s Logar province, south of Kabul. He was assigned to the 91st Engineer Company in Rhinelander, Wis.

Jordan L. Chrobot, 24, of Frederick, Md.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Chrobot was fatally shot Sept. 26 during a firefight with insurgents in southwest Afghanistan’s Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Alex French IV, 31, of Milledgeville, Ga.; staff sergeant, Army National Guard. French was killed Wednesday when his unit was attacked with a makeshift bomb in southeast Afghanistan’s Khost province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment in Lawrenceville, Ga.

Kevin J. Graham, 27, of Benton, Ky.; specialist, Army. Graham was killed Sept. 26 when his vehicle was attacked with a makeshift bomb in southwest Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Russell S. Hercules Jr., 22 of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; specialist, Army. Hercules was killed Thursday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in central Afghanistan’s Wardak province, west of Kabul. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Jack M. Martin III, 26, of Bethany, Okla.; staff sergeant, Army. Martin was one of two soldiers killed Tuesday when a homemade bomb exploded near their Humvee on the island of Jolo in the southern Philippines, where they were supporting anti-terror operations. The bomb attack was blamed on Al Qaeda-linked militants. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Roberto D. Sanchez, 24 of Satellite Beach, Fla.; sergeant, Army. Sanchez was killed Thursday when his unit was attacked with a makeshift bomb in southwest Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga.

Christopher D. Shaw, 37, of Markham, Ill.; sergeant first class, Army. Shaw was one of two soldiers killed Tuesday when a homemade bomb exploded near their Humvee on the island of Jolo in the southern Philippines, where they were supporting anti-terror operations. The bomb attack was blamed on Al Qaeda-linked militants. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Ross E. Vogel III, 27, of Red Lion, Pa.; specialist, Army. Vogel died of noncombat-related injuries Tuesday in Kut, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 67th Signal Battalion, 35th Signal Brigade at Ft. Gordon, Ga.
