Re “Beasts of burden still lead the military pack in Afghanistan,” Column One, July 7
I found the article on the military’s use of donkeys and mules to access the rugged terrain of Afghanistan very enlightening. Until now, I thought all of the stubborn mules were in Washington.

I am not one of those animal-rights zealots. However, as I read the article describing the military’s use of donkeys and mules in Afghanistan, I could not help but feel sorry for those animals. Our military has a track record over there of abuse.
I can only hope that those blessed beasts of burden will not be the new victims of abuse by our military. They do not have a voice to share their pain.
