A woman in custody for allegedly trying to run over her ex-boyfriend’s pregnant girlfriend was charged Tuesday with murdering the baby and trying to kill the mother, authorities said.
Monica Mercado, 27, surrendered at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Newton station Sunday, hours after police said she used her sport utility vehicle to run down a 24-year-old pregnant woman who was dating her ex-boyfriend.
The woman was struck near East 102nd Street and Towne Avenue in South-Central Los Angeles about 10:30 a.m., police said.
According to a news release from the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, the child was born alive by caesarean section and died of head trauma.
Mercado’s arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed, a spokesperson for the district attorney said.
