A knife-wielding man who had just stabbed a woman was fatally shot by Pasadena police Sunday morning, authorities said.
Several patrol cars answering 911 calls about the stabbing at Summit Avenue and Painter Street arrived on the scene at 8:11 a.m. to find the man standing over the victim, police Cmdr. Eric Mills said. When officers ordered the assailant to step away, he charged them with the knife and an officer shot him in self-defense, Mills said.
The man later died at a hospital. The woman was in stable condition and underwent surgery.
Police were unsure of the relationship between the two but believed it was domestic. They were not identified, nor was the officer involved in the shooting, which is under investigation.
Police released a tape of a 911 call to the department in which a passerby says: “He was stabbing her. She’s in the street. . . . There’s blood everywhere.”
