Above the law?

Re “President claims oversight exemption,” June 23

The Bush administration’s own executive order from 2003 makes an admirable point: “Our democratic principles require that the American people be informed of the activities of their government” -- yet this is the same order that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney now say they are above obeying.

I’ve taught social studies to students for 14 years, and I now have to amend my curriculum, for it seems there are people who are above the Constitution. In the old days, we called them kings and queens.

Every time this administration explains what it really meant, the hole gets a little bit deeper. I truly hope that even the most strident supporter of this gang now knows what they were really all about: a one-party system (Republicans) and power, period. Bush will leave a legacy behind him all right, but he isn’t going to like it.

Anyone who trashes the Constitution as often and with as much impunity needs to be trashed (impeached). We need to impeach both Bush and Cheney. Wouldn’t that be an interesting way to get the first female president?

Re “No veep is an island,” editorial, June 23

Were two words in the first paragraph of this editorial transposed? Seems as though our vice president’s assumption of special rights and dispensations should be seen as ludicrous if it were not so scary, not scary if it were not so ludicrous. Must have been a misprint.

So the president and vice president think themselves to be above the law. Of course this principle does not apply to Democrats.
