SANTA BARBARA — A private passenger jet with 15 people aboard skidded off the end of the runway at Santa Barbara Airport on Sunday after failing to take off, a Fire Department spokesman said.
“The pilot was trying to take off and it just wasn’t lifting, it just wasn’t going,” said Battalion Chief John Ahlman.
Ahlman said the pilot braked and the plane skidded onto a grassy overrun area about 800 feet past the runway. No one was hurt, but the plane’s front wheel broke off, he said.
The pilot reported technical difficulties, but Ahlman said no details were available about what may have caused the problem.
The airport’s main runway was closed for about three hours beginning about 2:15 p.m. while crews worked to tow the plane away.
The Dassault Falcon jet, carrying 13 passengers and two crew, was en route to Tampa, Fla.
