A reminder of pain and suffering

Re “Killing machine,” editorial, July 14
Thank you for again appealing to the world so that perhaps the barbarism known as capital punishment will someday end.
It is not only the possibility that innocents may be murdered by the state; it is the whole concept of lowering ourselves to such an abjectly easy solution as “killing as an answer” that crazes me.
The Times mentions the stoning to death of an adulterous man in Iran. The woman with whom he committed the act has also been condemned to the same fate and has been in prison for 11 years -- as he had been.
But there will be a difference between his execution and what she will suffer: She will be buried up to her neck, but a man is buried up to his waist before the stoning. Such horrors must stop.
