Hunter is charged in homicide

A white hunter was charged in Marinette with killing a Hmong immigrant in a case that recalls a racially charged incident in 2002 in which a member of the Asian ethnic group shot to death six white hunters.
While not calling it a hate crime pending further investigation, Dist. Atty. Brent DeBord accused James Nichols, 28, of killing Cha Vang, a 30-year-old father of five, with a shotgun. Vang also was stabbed six times.
The two encountered each other Jan. 5 while hunting in the northern part of the state. Nichols, a convicted burglar who was also charged with concealing Vang’s corpse and illegal possession of a firearm, gave conflicting stories to police that included being wounded by an unknown hunter, DeBord said.
