Driver on 60 Freeway is killed in apparent car-to-car shooting

Times Staff Writer

A motorist was shot and killed Monday night on the westbound Pomona Freeway, just east of the Los Angeles city limits, authorities said.

The victim, described only as an adult Latino male, was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics.

Early indications were that the shooter was in another car on the freeway, said Sgt. Howard Cooper of the county Sheriff’s Department’s homicide unit. No arrests were made, and no suspect description was available.

The shooting, reported about 6:15 p.m., took place just east of South Indiana Street. The victim apparently was the driver of what reportedly was a white Honda minivan. He was believed to have been the only occupant in the car, and there was no contact with any other vehicle after the victim’s came to rest on the freeway.

All four westbound lanes of the freeway were shut down for hours as homicide detectives investigated. A California Highway Patrol official said traffic, although lighter than usual because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, was backed up for about two miles.
