Oregon gets past Arizona

TUCSON — Aaron Brooks banked a shot over two defenders with two seconds left to give No. 15 Oregon a 79-77 victory over 10th-ranked Arizona on Sunday night.

Brooks finished with 21 points to lead the Ducks, 16-1 overall and 4-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference, to their second victory over a top 10 team in eight days. They defeated UCLA, 68-66 in Eugene on Jan. 6, when the Bruins were ranked No. 1.

In a showdown between two of the Pac-10’s most powerful teams, the Ducks tied the score, 77-77, on Brooks’ three-point basket with 1:50 to play.

After Arizona point guard Mustafa Shakur turned the ball over, Brooks drove the right side of the lane and banked a shot over two defenders to put the Ducks ahead for good.

Marcus Williams’ fall-away 18-footer at the buzzer was short.

Williams scored a career-high 34 points and had 12 rebounds for Arizona (13-3, 4-2) in its second loss in three games. The Wildcats did not make a basket in the final 5:15.

The Ducks scored seven consecutive points to take a 62-56 lead. But Arizona went on a 7-0 run to lead, 63-62, with 9:40 left.

Arizona went on an 8-0 run but went cold down the stretch. The Ducks, 6-0 away from home, have passed last year’s win total.
