An opposition surge to Iraq war

Re “Lawmakers get private surge pitch,” Jan. 9
President Bush’s plan to escalate the war in Iraq is another tragic blunder. (The first blunder was to start the war in the first place.)
The misconceived neocon belief that the United States can impose a secular democracy on a fundamentalist Islamic nation was a naively impossible idea even before it was begun. It is time to end this arrogant military adventure and bring the U.S. troops home immediately. A surge in the fighting will only result in a surge of killing.
