Rusty Baghdatis advances in Qatar

Third-seeded Marcos Baghdatis reached the second round of the Qatar Open at Doha with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber on Monday.
“It was very cold and windy out there,” Baghdatis said. “I have not played for two to three months, so I found it difficult to find my rhythm.”
Elsewhere, fourth-seeded Andy Murray beat Filippo Volandri, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, fifth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny beat Daniele Bracciali, 7-5, 6-3, and sixth-seeded Robin Soderling defeated Kristof Vliegen, 6-3, 6-3.

Third-seeded Xavier Malisse outplayed Asian Games gold medalist Danai Udomchoke, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round of the ATP Tour’s Chennai Open at Chennai, India. In another first-round match, Kevin Kim of the United States rallied to beat Simon Greul, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.... Nicole Pratt beat Elena Bovina, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-1, and will face top-seeded Martina Hingis in the second round of the Australian Women’s Hardcourt Championships at Gold Coast.... Miami football player Olsen will turn pro
Miami Hurricanes tight end Greg Olsen plans to skip his senior season and turn pro, his new agent said.
Agent Drew Rosenhaus announced Olsen’s decision one day after the Hurricanes completed their season by beating Nevada, 21-20, in the MPC Computers Bowl.

Senior forward Chris Anderson has been declared academically ineligible, cutting short his career at Wyoming, Coach Steve McClain said.
He played in 62 games for the Cowboys during his career, starting 12. He averaged 3.5 points and 2.6 rebounds.

Boxer from Montenegro killed outside Bronx bar
Kemal Kolenovic, a middleweight boxer who emigrated from Montenegro, was killed outside a Bronx bar when he was struck by a car that drove onto the sidewalk, police and witnesses said.
Kolenovic, 28, was 10-6-2, with five knockouts.

Former world featherweight champion Naseem Hamed had a royal honor taken from him after serving a jail sentence for reckless driving. The former International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Organization champion was given the Member of the Order of the British Empire, or MBE, for services to boxing by Queen Elizabeth II in December 1998.

Switzerland’s Andreas Kuettel won the second event of the Four Hills ski jumping tournament after rain and wind canceled the second run at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Kuettel jumped 125.5 meters and earned 135.9 points.

Ex-Brooklyn Dodger Koy dies at 97
Ernie Koy, the former Brooklyn Dodgers outfielder who homered in his first at-bat in the majors, died in Bellville, Texas. He was 97. He played for the Dodgers from 1938 to ’40.
