Tropical storm leaves 14 dead

Tropical Storm Olga triggered floods and landslides on the island of Hispaniola, killing at least 13 people and forcing thousands to flee their homes before weakening to a depression, authorities said. In Puerto Rico, one person was killed when an avalanche buried a vehicle.
Hardest hit was the northern province of Santiago in the Dominican Republic, where heavy rains forced authorities to release water from a dam into the swollen Yaque river. The provincial governor said at least seven towns were flooded.
Officials acknowledged that the release might have caused some of the nation’s 11 deaths.
An elderly woman and a 3-year-old boy were reported killed in Haiti, which shares Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic.
