And then there were the others ...
Several films, shows and performers who were considered sure things this award season -- and some that had even gained attention elsewhere -- failed to score a Golden Globe nomination Thursday:
MOVIES
Best picture
“Blood Diamond”: nominated by the Broadcast Film Critics Assn., selected by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures.
“United 93”: winner, New York Film Critics Circle award.
“Children of Men”: The dark drama had generated plenty of early buzz for its star, Clive Owen, and director Alfonso Cuaron.
Best actor
Ryan Gosling: nominated for “Half Nelson” by both the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. and Film Independent’s Spirit Award; winner, breakthrough performance actor, National Board of Review of Motion Pictures.
Best supporting actor
Djimon Hounsou: nominated for “Blood Diamond” by the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.; winner, National Board of Review.
Michael Sheen: winner, Los Angeles Film Critics Assn., for “The Queen.”
Jackie Earle Haley: winner, New York Film Critics Circle, “Little Children.”
Best director
Bill Condon: nominated, Broadcast Film Critics, for “Dreamgirls.”
Todd Field: “Little Children” earned a Golden Globe nomination for best picture but not for its director.
TELEVISION
TV actors, actresses
Denis Leary: “Rescue Me” star nominated earlier this year for an Emmy for best actor in a drama.
Mariska Hargitay: won 2006 Golden Globe for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”
Sandra Oh: “Grey’s Anatomy” star nominated earlier this year for an Emmy Award for best supporting actress in a drama.
Other favorites out in the cold: FX’s “The Shield” and “Nip/Tuck,” Lauren Graham of “Gilmore Girls.”
