CHICAGO — A gas main at a construction site ruptured Thursday, prompting officials to close a busy expressway and evacuate about 1,000 people from a lakefront exposition center.
No injuries or explosions were reported, and the evacuation and freeway closure were precautions, Fire Chief Kevin MacGregor said.
Gas to the expo center, McCormick Place, was shut off and people were allowed to return within an hour, fire spokeswoman Eve Rodriguez said. The expressway began reopening a short time later.
