State Sen. Ben Westlund dropped out of the gubernatorial race, potentially shifting momentum toward Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski.
Westlund, an independent, said at a news conference in Salem that he didn’t want to be a “spoiler” candidate, skimming off enough votes from Kulongoski to deliver a victory to Republican Ron Saxton.
Polls have shown Westlund with support from 5% to 14% of registered voters.
