From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A 44-year-old man was killed Tuesday afternoon when a Union Pacific freight train hit his van on a rail crossing, officials said.
Witnesses said the man drove around a crossing gate before the 4:36 p.m. collision at South Fullerton Road just south of East Valley Boulevard, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Gerard Velona.
“The bells were ringing and the lights were flashing,” he said.
Because the train was more than half a mile along, traffic backed up on nearby roads, but Metrolink service was unaffected, sheriff’s officials said.
