Pittsburgh 6, at Chicago 0: Rookie Tom Gorzelanny yielded two singles in eight innings and outpitched Carlos Zambrano, whose nine-game winning streak dating to May 31 was ended as he failed in his bid to become the league’s first 13-game winner. Zambrano had been 9-0 in his previous 11 starts, but gave up a season-high nine hits and five runs.
at Cincinnati 5, Atlanta 4: The Reds, who were held hitless by Greg Maddux for six innings in a 3-0 loss to the Dodgers on Thursday night, didn’t get a hit off Atlanta’s Chuck James until the sixth inning.
Milwaukee 4, at St. Louis 3: The Brewers extended the Cardinals’ losing streak to eight games. The Cardinals have been outscored, 54-29, during the skid.
Houston 8, at Arizona 7: Mike Lamb and Willy Taveras hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning to lead the Astros. Lamb drove reliever Tony Pena’s first pitch 418 feet into the right-field seats. Taveras followed with his first homer of the season.
Washington 6, at San Diego 2: Rookie Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run homer and Alfonso Soriano had an RBI double and threw out a runner at the plate to lead the Nationals. Soriano leads the major leagues with 17 outfield assists.
Colorado 5, at San Francisco 2: Yorvit Torrealba hit a three-run homer against his former team and also scored a run on a balk. The Rockies cleared the field in the ninth after fans threw garbage following the ejection of Barry Bonds by the home-plate umpire.
