Washington 4, at San Francisco 1: Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run double and Livan Hernandez (9-8) won his fourth decision in a row. The Giants lost their ninth game in a row, the club’s longest skid since dropping 10 in a row from June 21-30, 1996. Barry Bonds was held out of the lineup because of swelling in his right knee.
Houston 1, at San Diego 0: Andy Pettitte (10-11) outpitched Jake Peavy (5-11) in his first game in San Diego since the 1998 World Series. Pettitte and Peavy went head-to-head for the third time since 2004, and the Houston lefty now has a 2-1 advantage over the Padres’ righty.
Milwaukee 1, at Colorado 0: David Bush (7-8) gave up five singles over six innings and Damian Miller drove in the run with a single. It was only the fourth 1-0 game in the 12-year history of Coors Field, but the third this year.
at Florida 6, New York 5: Pinch-hitter Josh Willingham hit a two-run homer off Billy Wagner with one out in the ninth inning. Wagner (3-2) blew a save for the fifth time in 27 chances.
Atlanta 4, at Pittsburgh 2: John Smoltz won his fifth decision in a row and Adam LaRoche homered twice to help the Braves break a four-game losing streak.
at Chicago 9, Arizona 3: Rich Hill (1-4) pitched eight solid innings for his first major league win and Aramis Ramirez hit one of Chicago’s four homers.
