Off the beaten track and loving it

“UNDERSTUDY to the Riviera” [Oct. 2] brought back great memories of a coastal bus ride I took from Dubrovnik, Croatia, to Bar, passing through Kotor in Montenegro while on a hitchhiking trip in the mid-’80s.
No, it was not five-star, but it was well worth being off the beaten track.
Which brings me to Ernie Salomon’s letter [“On the Itinerary: Great Views and Food,” Letters, Oct. 16], which may spell out the difference between tourist and traveler.
When you travel, it is sometimes necessary to forgo the usual safe havens and routes to experience distant cultures.
